As a busy commercial real estate professional, you may be a bit unsure about adding another item to your already busy to-do list. However, you should definitely consider making LinkedIn a part of your business and marketing strategy. If you’ve read some of my blog posts before, you know that I’m a huge advocate for social media. It’s a free way to connect with a wide audience, and you need to be where your potential clients are. LinkedIn is the only site that was specifically created as a social media platform to connect on a professional level. Instead of seeing posts about someone’s weekend plans, or what they had for lunch, people are sharing business related articles and tips. LinkedIn is focused on business, which makes it the perfect social media platform to build your business on. Did you know that there are currently over 546 million users in more than 200 countries worldwide? The users range from entry level positions to the top executives of companies. So, whoever your target audience is you can connect with them on LinkedIn.

How To Promote Your CRE Business

LinkedIn should be just one piece of your marketing strategy. It works hand in hand with Twitter and/or Facebook, and it’s just one more avenue to reach an even broader audience. Get started on LinkedIn with these steps:

  1. Build your personal profile
  2. Create your company page (if applicable)
  3. Join active groups

Your personal profile is like an online resume. Include all of your relevant work experience, education, skills, and volunteer information, and use your professional headshot photo as your main profile image. You can even take it a step further by asking a few colleagues and clients to write a recommendation for you to give your profile a boost. Keep in mind that when you connect with someone on LinkedIn, they will check out your profile to learn more about your professional background, so you want your profile to be as complete as possible.

If you have your own commercial real estate company, you can take it to the next step and create a company page on LinkedIn. This gives you the opportunity to consistently post updates and gain a loyal following for your business. Your company page is a great place to post your latest blog posts (to drive traffic back to your website), and to even post job openings. LinkedIn is actually a great place to attract quality employees.

Whether you have a personal profile, a company page, or both, you can then make an effort to connect with people you know. Think of current and past co-workers, clients, and vendor relationships and reach out to connect with those people.

Once your profile is set up, it’s time to join a few groups on LinkedIn. There are groups for almost every topic and every industry, so just pick a few and jump right in.
