With so many great conferences coming up, you’ll surely have plenty of time to network and make valuable connections. Use these networking tips for CRE conference season to get the most out of the experience:

Do Your Homework

Before you attend a commercial real estate conference, do a little research about the conference. Understand who is sponsoring the event, what companies will be exhibiting that you want to check out, and who will be in attendance. It’s also good to take a look at the schedule of events so you can plan your time wisely. Of course, there will be classes you’ll want to attend, plus you’ll need time to visit the exhibit hall and attend networking parties. Make a tentative schedule for yourself before the event so you have a game plan.

Connect Before The Conference

Make a list of the top 5-10 people you want to meet at the conference, and reach out to them a few days before by email or phone. You can simply say that you’re looking forward to seeing them at the conference, or even try to schedule a specific time to meet them for coffee or drinks. Remember that their schedule will be busy at the conference also, so if there’s a few people you definitely want to meet, it’s best to schedule the time in advance to ensure you both will be available.

Network, Network, Network

Get the most of of the commercial real estate conference by chatting with as many people as you reasonably can. Talk to the people who are sitting next to you in class; at each meal time, sit at a table of people you don’t know; and mix and mingle during the open exhibit time. You will find that you’ll simply make small talk with some people, and you’ll dive into deeper business conversations with others. In all cases, make an effort to exchange business cards with each person you have a conversation with.

Make Notes and Follow Up

You’ll meet so many new people at a commercial real estate conference, so it’s important to make notes about each of your conversations while it’s fresh in your head.
